Borderlands 2024
Borderlands is a 2024 American science fiction action-comedy film directed by Eli Roth and co-written with Joe Crombie, based on the highly popular video game franchise. The plot follows Lilith (Cate Blanchett), an infamous outlaw with a mysterious past, who reluctantly returns to her chaotic home planet of Pandora to find the missing daughter of the universe's most powerful man, Atlas (Édgar Ramírez). Lilith is forced to form an unlikely and dysfunctional team of misfits to complete the mission: Roland (Kevin Hart), a former elite mercenary now seeking redemption; Tiny Tina (Ariana Greenblatt), a feral, volatile pre-teen demolitionist; Krieg (Florian Munteanu), Tina's musclebound, silent protector; Dr. Patricia Tannis (Jamie Lee Curtis), an eccentric, clinically aloof scientist; and the sarcastic, wisecracking robot, Claptrap (voiced by Jack Black). This ragtag crew must battle alien monsters and dangerous bandits to locate the girl, who holds the key to the legendary Vault, which contains an ancient and powerful Eridian secret, leading to a confrontation that reveals Lilith’s own deep connection to the planet's lore. The film, which was released by Lionsgate on August 9, 2024, was a massive box office disappointment despite its significant production budget, estimated to be between $110 million and $120 million. It opened weakly with a domestic weekend gross of approximately $8.6 million, and ultimately finished its theatrical run with a worldwide total of only about $33 million, making it a major financial flop. Critically, the film was almost universally panned, receiving a low approval rating from critics and earning a terrible "D+" CinemaScore from opening-day audiences, with many viewers calling it an incoherent and poorly executed adaptation. Reviewers heavily criticized the film's cluttered plot, overreliance on distracting dialogue, failure to capture the game's unique tone, and what many fans felt was the bizarre and inaccurate casting of key characters, particularly Kevin Hart as the traditionally stoic Roland and Cate Blanchett as the Siren Lilith. Given its extremely poor theatrical performance, Lionsgate released the film to Premium Video-On-Demand (PVOD) on August 30, 2024, just three weeks after its premiere, for a high digital purchase or rental price. The film has since been released to subscription streaming platforms and is currently available to stream in the US on Starz (as the distributor Lionsgate owns the platform). It is also available to buy or rent digitally on all major platforms like Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.
