Don't Breathe 2 (2021)
Don't Breathe 2 is a 2021 American horror thriller film and the sequel to the 2016 sleeper hit, with Rodo Sayagues taking over as director from Fede Álvarez, while co-writing the screenplay with him. The plot takes place eight years after the original, featuring the return of Norman Nordstrom, "The Blind Man" (Stephen Lang), who now lives in a secluded, isolated house with his adopted eleven-year-old daughter, Phoenix (Madelyn Grace). Norman, portrayed in a complex and controversial anti-hero light, has been training Phoenix in survival skills. The fragile peace is shattered when a group of criminals, led by Raylan (Brendan Sexton III), breaks into their home to kidnap Phoenix. The narrative then shifts from a simple home invasion to a brutal rescue mission, flipping the moral dynamic by revealing that Raylan is Phoenix's real father (her name is actually Tara), and Norman kidnapped her after her mother's meth lab exploded years prior. The final, shocking twist reveals Raylan is abducting her to harvest her heart for a transplant to save her terminally ill biological mother, forcing Norman to fight a new, even more depraved set of villains to protect the girl he views as his own. The cast is headlined by the intense performance of Stephen Lang as the central, morally ambiguous figure. He is supported by Madelyn Grace as Phoenix/Tara and Brendan Sexton III as the chief antagonist, Raylan. The film was produced by Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert, with a modest production budget of $15 million. Critically, the film received a mixed-to-negative response, with a 43% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviewers praised Lang's committed performance and the film's tense, brutal action sequences, particularly the set piece where Norman hunts the invaders in the abandoned hotel. However, the film faced significant controversy and criticism for its attempt to craft a redemption arc for Norman Nordstrom, who was established as a serial killer and sexual assaulter in the first film. Many critics felt this creative choice was ill-judged and undermined the story's moral compass. At the box office, the film was less successful than its predecessor, grossing approximately $47.2 million worldwide against its $15 million budget. While profitable, it paled in comparison to the original Don't Breathe's $157 million haul. For streaming, the film had a theatrical release followed by a Premium Video-On-Demand (PVOD) window. It is currently available to stream on various subscription platforms, including Hulu and MAX (HBO Max), depending on the region, and is also available to buy or rent digitally on services like Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.
