Drive-Away Dolls 2024

Drive-Away Dolls is a crime comedy road film that marks the first solo narrative feature directed by Ethan Coen, who co-wrote the script with his wife and long-time Coen Brothers editor, Tricia Cooke. Set in 1999, the film follows two lesbian best friends, Jamie (Margaret Qualley), an uninhibited free spirit reeling from a breakup, and Marian (Geraldine Viswanathan), a demure friend looking to loosen up. In search of a fresh start, they embark on an impromptu road trip from Philadelphia to Tallahassee, Florida using a drive-away car service. Due to a car mix-up, they accidentally take a car containing a mysterious metal briefcase and a preserved human head, coveted by a trio of inept criminals led by "The Chief" (Colman Domingo). The chaotic, hyper-sexual chase revolves around the contents of the briefcase: a collection of dildos cast from the penises of powerful, closeted public figures, intended for a blackmail scheme. The film also features a star-studded cast in cameo roles, including Pedro Pascal, Matt Damon, and Beanie Feldstein. The film received a mixed-to-negative critical reception, falling short of the standard set by the Coen Brothers' joint work. It holds a 65% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 58/100 on Metacritic. Critics praised its energetic, unapologetically queer B-movie aesthetic and the appealing odd-couple chemistry between Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan. However, many reviewers found the film to be "flimsy," "erratic," and lacking the thematic depth and tight execution of Coen's previous work, with some calling it merely a "raunchy trifle." This critical ambivalence was mirrored by audiences, who gave the film a particularly low "C" CinemaScore. Drive-Away Dolls was released theatrically on February 23, 2024, by Focus Features. It was a commercial disappointment, grossing approximately $7.9 million worldwide against a reported budget of around $20 million. It opened poorly at the domestic box office, missing the top five in its first weekend. The film was released quickly on home video/digital platforms in March 2024 and is currently available to stream on Peacock (in the US) and is available for rental or purchase on all major digital platforms.
