Father Mother Sister Brother 2025

Directed and written by the legendary indie auteur Jim Jarmusch, Father Mother Sister Brother (2025) is a bittersweet comedy-drama anthology that explores the intricate and often strained dynamics of familial relationships across three distinct global settings. The film, which celebrated its world premiere at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival on August 31, 2025, made history by winning the prestigious Golden Lion, marking Jarmusch's first top prize at the festival. Structured as a narrative triptych, the film captures the quiet, observational, and non-judgmental style characteristic of Jarmusch’s earlier anthology works like Night on Earth, emphasizing the secrets and silences that define adult connections with aging or deceased parents. The plot is divided into three chapters, each set in a different country and focusing on a unique family configuration. The first segment, "Father," takes place in a snowy rural area of the northeastern United States, where estranged siblings Jeff, played by Adam Driver, and Emily, portrayed by Mayim Bialik, visit their reclusive, disheveled father, played by Tom Waits. While they worry about his apparent poverty and mental health, the visit is punctuated by the unsettling discovery of a genuine Rolex on his wrist, suggesting he may be faking his financial disarray for reasons known only to him. The second chapter, "Mother," shifts the setting to Dublin, Ireland, where an elegant and self-possessed novelist, played by Charlotte Rampling, hosts an annual tea for her two daughters: the high-strung Timothea, played by Cate Blanchett, and the free-spirited Lilith, played by Vicky Krieps. This segment highlights a "ballet of avoidance," where the daughters hide the realities of their personal lives from a mother who uses her polite decorum as a shield. The final chapter, "Sister Brother," set in Paris, follows twins Skye and Billy, played by Indya Moore and Luka Sabbat, as they sort through their late parents' belongings following a sudden plane crash. Unlike the previous pairs, these siblings share a deep, surreal level of affection, yet they discover forged documents and secret IDs that suggest their parents led lives entirely different from the ones they imagined. The film features an acclaimed ensemble cast that blends long-time Jarmusch collaborators with fresh faces. Tom Waits provides a standout performance as the eccentric patriarch, while Adam Driver and Mayim Bialik bring a grounded, workplace-like tension to their roles as siblings. The powerhouse pairing of Charlotte Rampling and Cate Blanchett, alongside Vicky Krieps, anchors the Dublin chapter with a theatrical, high-stakes emotional distance. Supporting roles include Sarah Greene as a companion posing as a driver and French veteran Françoise Lebrun as a Parisian concierge. The film's aesthetic is further enriched by the cinematography of Frederick Elmes and Yorick Le Saux, as well as an atmospheric, minimalist score composed by Jarmusch himself in collaboration with the artist Anika. Regarding its commercial and streaming status, Father Mother Sister Brother began its limited theatrical rollout in the United States on December 24, 2025, via the global distributor MUBI. While it is currently in the early stages of its theatrical run and lacks final box office totals, it is already being hailed as one of the top independent films of the year, having secured a spot on the National Board of Review's Top 10 list. The film is scheduled for a wider international release throughout early 2026, including a theatrical premiere in France on January 7. For worldwide audiences, the film will eventually be available for streaming exclusively on the MUBI platform following its exclusive theatrical window, which is expected to conclude in the spring of 2026.
