Song Sung Blue 2025
Song Sung Blue (2025) is a biographical musical drama directed and written by Craig Brewer, based on the 2008 documentary of the same name by Greg Kohs. Set in Milwaukee, the film stars Hugh Jackman as Mike "Lightning" Sardina and Kate Hudson as Claire "Thunder" Sardina, a real-life couple who formed a joyous Neil Diamond tribute band called "Lightning & Thunder." The story follows Mike, a recovering alcoholic and Vietnam veteran, and Claire, a single mother and Patsy Cline impersonator, as they find love and pursue their musical dreams against all odds. While the first half of the film is a heartwarming "underdog" tale of their rising local fame—which eventually led to them opening for Pearl Jam—the second half takes a poignant and dramatic turn following a tragic car accident that leaves Claire with a permanent disability. The film has received praise for the chemistry between Jackman and Hudson, particularly their vocal performances and the "dignity" they bring to the world of tribute artists. It features many of Neil Diamond's iconic hits, with Diamond himself having granted the rights to his music for the production. Beyond the music, the narrative explores themes of resilience, the "indomitable human spirit," and the complexities of blending families while navigating the hardships of the American working class.
