Sinister 2012
Sinister (2012) is a supernatural horror film directed by Scott Derrickson and co-written by Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill. The movie stars Ethan Hawke as Ellison Oswalt, a struggling true-crime writer desperate for a comeback hit after his previous works failed to match the success of his first book. Unbeknownst to his wife, Tracy (Juliet Rylance), and two children, Trevor and Ashley, Ellison moves his family into a house in Chatford, Pennsylvania, where the previous occupants, the Stevenson family, were gruesomely murdered. While searching the attic, Ellison discovers a box containing a projector and Super 8 film reels labeled "home movies." Watching the footage, he discovers it depicts the murders of various families in bizarre, ritualistic ways across different decades, with one child from each family disappearing afterward. Ellison is initially torn between reporting the films as evidence of a possible serial killer for a new book or turning them over to the police, but his investigation quickly leads him to believe a supernatural entity is involved. Consulting with a local Deputy (James Ransone) and an occult expert, Professor Jonas (Vincent D'Onofrio), Ellison learns the murders are connected to an ancient Babylonian pagan deity named Bughuul, the "eater of children," who possesses a child from each family, forcing them to kill their relatives before he consumes their soul. The film ends tragically as the entity's influence overtakes Ellison's daughter, Ashley, who murders her entire family. Produced on a modest budget of approximately $3 million, Sinister was a significant box office success, grossing over $87 million worldwide.
