Summer of 69
Summer of 69, directed by Jillian Bell in her feature directorial debut, centers on Abby Flores (Sam Morelos), an awkward high school senior who spends most of her time playing video games and harboring a long-standing crush on her classmate, Max Warren (Matt Cornett). When Abby discovers that Max is newly single during the last week of school, she becomes determined to win him over before graduation. Misled by information from the school mascot, Abby believes Max's favorite sexual position is "69" and decides to seek expert help to learn about it. This leads her to Diamond Dolls, a local strip club, where she encounters Santa Monica (Chloe Fineman), an experienced exotic dancer. Desperate to impress Max, Abby hires Santa Monica to teach her the ways of seduction. However, as their lessons progress, an unexpected friendship blossoms between the two women. Santa Monica, despite her confident stage persona, secretly feels like a failure, especially with her upcoming high school reunion looming. Through their interactions, Abby begins to realize that true self-discovery and genuine connection are more valuable than simply trying to win over her crush. The film explores themes of self-confidence, friendship, and navigating the complexities of adolescence, all wrapped in a comedic narrative.

A wonderful campy homage to the reinvented underdog comedy. The cast was great - comedy gold from different actors with different backgrounds and different perspectives. From online sensations to TV icons to SNL legends. With relative newcomers that did a great job. Excellent comedic timing and charisma. You know that the director did a great job when it feels like the talent had great fun working on this movie while maintaining a high standard of technical execution. It's the perfect movie when you want to spend an evening forgetting about the nonsense of this world, not overthink things and have a laugh.
