The Brutalist 2024

Directed by Brady Corbet, The Brutalist is a three-and-a-half-hour historical epic divided into two parts and an epilogue. The film centers on László Tóth (Adrien Brody), a Hungarian-Jewish architect and Holocaust survivor who arrives in Pennsylvania in 1947 with his wife, Erzsébet (Felicity Jones), and mute niece, Zsófia (Raffey Cassidy). Initially living in squalor and battling addiction, László's fortunes change dramatically when he is discovered by the volatile, wealthy industrialist Harrison Lee Van Buren (Guy Pearce). Van Buren commissions László to design a sprawling, monumental community center and chapel—the Van Buren Institute—as a memorial to his late mother. The film then chronicles the decade-long, often obsessive, and morally compromising process of constructing this massive concrete complex, ultimately charting the erosion of László's personal life and artistic integrity as he sacrifices everything to realize his "American Dream," concluding with an epilogue that addresses the controversial legacy of the building and the Tóth family. The film features a potent ensemble of acclaimed actors. Adrien Brody delivers a performance that has been hailed as career-defining as the central character, the tormented architect László Tóth. Felicity Jones plays his supportive yet increasingly distant wife, Erzsébet Tóth, and Guy Pearce embodies the demanding, eccentric patron Harrison Lee Van Buren. Raffey Cassidy plays Zsófia, László's mute niece. The supporting cast includes Joe Alwyn as Harry Lee Van Buren, Alessandro Nivola as Attila, and Isaach de Bankolé as Gordon, who are all instrumental figures in László's professional and personal journey. The Brutalist premiered at the 81st Venice International Film Festival and was met with widespread critical acclaim, ultimately winning the Silver Lion for Best Direction for Brady Corbet. Critics praised its ambitious scope, immersive period detail, and stunning visual language, which utilized the rare VistaVision format. The film was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, winning Best Actor for Adrien Brody, Best Cinematography, and Best Original Score. It holds a strong 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with reviewers calling it a "monumental achievement" and a challenging, yet rewarding, cinematic experience. Despite its lengthy running time (215 minutes) and challenging subject matter, The Brutalist performed well at the independent box office. Produced on a budget reported to be around $9.6 million, the film grossed a successful total of $50.4 million worldwide. Its strong critical acclaim, combined with its wins in major awards categories, contributed to its steady performance, particularly in arthouse theaters and international markets, securing its status as a critical and modest commercial success for an auteur-driven historical epic. The Brutalist had a standard theatrical release followed by its home media debut. It became available for purchase and rental on all major digital platforms, including Prime Video and Apple TV, on February 18, 2025. Following its digital release, the film began streaming exclusively in the United States on Max (formerly HBO Max) on May 16, 2025, as part of its distribution deal with A24. In other major territories, such as India, the film was made available for streaming on JioHotstar by June 28, 2025.
