The Parenting 2025

The Parenting is a 2025 horror-comedy film that premiered on Max on March 13, 2025. Directed by Craig Johnson and written by former Saturday Night Live writer Kent Sublette, the movie centers on a young, gay couple, Rohan (Nik Dodani) and Josh (Brandon Flynn), who plan a seemingly perfect weekend getaway at a secluded country rental house to introduce their respective parents. The incredible ensemble cast is a major draw, featuring Brian Cox and Edie Falco as Rohan's high-strung, more traditional parents, Frank and Sharon, and Lisa Kudrow and Dean Norris as Josh's laid-back, middle-class parents, Liddy and Cliff. As the two wildly different families attempt to navigate awkward introductions and escalating parental tensions, they soon discover their rental, managed by the eccentric local Brenda (Parker Posey), is haunted by the presence of a 400-year-old poltergeist. The blend of classic "meet-the-parents" familial chaos with supernatural horror quickly takes a terrifying, yet often hilarious, turn when one of the parents becomes thoroughly possessed by the evil entity. With the help of their meddlesome best friend Sara (Vivian Bang), Rohan and Josh must put their differences aside, unite their sparring families, and stop the demon before their weekend turns into a permanent family nightmare. While some critics found the plot and characters to be simplistic and familiar to the horror-comedy genre, the film is widely praised for the impeccable casting and the stellar, over-the-top performances, especially from the veteran actors, which many agree elevate the movie beyond its basic premise.

Is it a cinematic masterpiece? Well, no... But does the fun the cast and crew had making it show through? Absolutely. Decided to have a drink and watch a random recommended movie and this did not disappoint. From the first scene with the most in-your-face exposition drop I knew this was going to be one to just sit back, turn my brain off, and enjoy some silliness. It's a great concept and the film doesn't try and pretend to be more than that. Also, the casting is fantastic and all the actors were a blast to watch. If you're looking for a great critique on the horror comedy genre look elsewhere, but if you just want to watch a fun horror comedy movie then this is worth the hour and a half runtime.
