The Secret Agent (O Agente Secreto) 2025
"The Secret Agent" (Portuguese: O Agente Secreto) is a highly anticipated 2025 Brazilian historical political thriller film, written and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Kleber Mendonça Filho. The film, which had its world premiere at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival on May 18, 2025, where it garnered significant buzz including the Best Actor prize for Wagner Moura and Best Director for Filho, is set in Brazil in 1977 during the tumultuous final years of the Brazilian military dictatorship. It follows Marcelo (Wagner Moura), a technology expert in his early 40s, who is on the run and arrives in Recife during carnival week, seeking to reunite with his son. However, he quickly discovers that the city is far from the peaceful refuge he hoped for, as he becomes entangled in its oppressive political climate and escalating violence. The sprawling narrative, which runs for approximately 158 minutes, features a large ensemble cast including Udo Kier and Maria Fernanda Cândido, and is noted for its blend of genre elements, including pulpy excitement, shoot-outs, and a touch of dark humor, all while being rooted in the real anxieties and tragedies of citizens living under a dictatorial regime. "The Secret Agent" is a co-production between Brazil, France, Germany, and the Netherlands, and marks Wagner Moura's first Portuguese-language production in eight years.
