"The Ugly Stepsister" (2025) is a body horror film that offers a twisted and gruesome reimagining of the classic Cinderella fairy tale. Directed and co-written by Emilie Blichfeldt in her feature directorial debut, the film stars Lea Myren as Elvira, the so-called "ugly" stepsister, who battles against her beautiful stepsister Agnes (Thea Sofie Loch Næss) in a kingdom where beauty is the ultimate currency. Desperate to win the affection of Prince Julian (Isac Calmroth), Elvira resorts to extreme and disturbing measures to transform herself amidst a ruthless competition for physical perfection orchestrated by her ambitious stepmother Rebekka (Ane Dahl Torp). The film delves into themes of beauty standards, social status, and the lengths people will go to achieve acceptance, featuring grotesque surgical procedures and unsettling imagery. "The Ugly Stepsister" premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2025 and was also showcased at the Berlin International Film Festival in February 2025. It was released in Norwegian theaters on March 7, 2025, and is scheduled for release in US cinemas on April 18, 2025, by IFC, with a UK release following on April 25, 2025.
