731 (2025)
The 2025 film 731 (also titled Evil Unbound or 731: Biochemical Revelations) is a high-profile Chinese historical war drama that premiered in Harbin on September 17, 2025, followed by a wide release on September 18 to coincide with the 94th anniversary of the "September 18 Incident." Directed by Zhao Linshan, the film is a stark dramatization of the atrocities committed by the Imperial Japanese Army’s notorious Unit 731 during World War II. It follows the story of Wang Yongzhang (played by Jiang Wu), an ordinary vendor who is captured and imprisoned within the sterile, horrific confines of the Harbin facility. Lured by false promises of freedom in exchange for "medical cooperation," he and other civilians are instead subjected to inhumane biological and chemical experiments, including frostbite tests, poison gas exposure, and vivisections. The production was a massive undertaking, with the director spending over a decade researching declassified reports and survivor testimonies to ensure historical accuracy. While the film achieved record-breaking pre-sales and a massive opening day in China, it has faced a polarized reception: it was praised by many as a "necessary courtroom of justice" and a reminder of historical trauma, but it also faced "review bombing" and criticism for its graphic nature and perceived lack of cinematic subtlety. Internationally, the film was released in the U.S., Canada, and Australia by Well Go USA Entertainment, serving as a global effort to highlight the often-overlooked history of Japanese germ warfare, which claimed at least 3,000 lives within the unit and harmed hundreds of thousands more across China.
