Beast of War 2025
Beast of War (2025) is a World War II action-horror-thriller directed and written by Kiah Roache-Turner, known for his work on Wyrmwood and Sting. The film is loosely inspired by the true events of the sinking of the HMAS Armidale in 1942. The plot centers on a troop of young Australian soldiers, fresh out of boot camp, who are crossing the treacherous Timor Sea when their transport ship is sunk by Japanese aircraft. A small handful of survivors, including the Indigenous soldier Leo (Mark Coles Smith) and his friend Will (Joel Nankervis), manage to gather on a quickly shrinking, makeshift raft of floating wreckage. Hundreds of miles from anywhere, their fight for survival against the elements, potential enemy attacks, and interpersonal conflicts—such as the racism directed at Leo by others like Des Kelly (Sam Delich)—is quickly compounded by a terrifying new threat: a massive, relentless great white shark. The film blends the gritty elements of a war-time survival drama with a visceral creature-feature horror, utilizing a practical animatronic shark model for its key attacks. Beast of War not only delivers on high-stakes action and suspense over its 87-minute runtime but also incorporates social commentary on racism within the Australian military during the era, ultimately framing the extreme situation as a desperate journey toward unity through shared trauma. The film was released in theaters and on digital platforms in October 2025.
