Carry-On 2024

Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, known for his fast-paced thrillers like Non-Stop and The Commuter, Carry-On is a high-tension action movie set almost entirely within the confines of a major US airport on Christmas Eve. The story centers on Ethan Kopek, a young, disillusioned TSA agent who is forced into a deadly cat-and-mouse game when a mysterious traveler blackmails him. Ethan is commanded, via an earpiece, to allow a dangerous package—containing a deadly nerve agent—to pass through security and onto a commercial flight. With the life of his pregnant girlfriend, Nora, hanging in the balance, Ethan must race against the clock to find the package and outsmart the blackmailer. Taron Egerton stars as the overwhelmed TSA agent Ethan, while Jason Bateman delivers an against-type performance as the slick, menacing antagonist known only as "The Traveler." The cast is rounded out by Sofia Carson (Nora) and Danielle Deadwyler as a Homeland Security agent who starts to piece together the conspiracy. The film received generally positive reviews from critics, earning a "Certified Fresh" rating of approximately 88% on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviewers praised the movie for being a fun, no-nonsense "throwback thriller" that succeeds on the strength of its casting and tight pacing. Taron Egerton was complimented for his sympathetic, everyman hero performance, and Jason Bateman's turn as a charismatic villain was a major highlight. However, audience reviews were more mixed, often criticizing the film for having an implausible plot and relying too heavily on action tropes. Despite the divided audience response, it was widely acknowledged as a successful piece of popcorn entertainment for the streaming giant. Carry-On was released exclusively on Netflix on December 13, 2024. Since it was a direct-to-streaming title, it has no traditional theatrical box office gross. It was, however, a massive commercial hit for Netflix. The film garnered over 97 million views globally within its first nine days and quickly became one of the platform's most-watched films of 2024. Its success was so significant that it was anticipated to become one of Netflix's all-time most-viewed English-language films, demonstrating high engagement despite being a streaming exclusive. It is currently available to watch worldwide for all Netflix subscribers.
