Last Breath 2025

The 2025 film Last Breath is a heart-pounding survival thriller based on the remarkable true story of a saturation diving accident in the North Sea in 2012. Directed and co-written by Alex Parkinson (an adaptation of his 2019 documentary of the same name), the movie follows deep-sea divers who face an impossible race against time to save a trapped crewmate. The plot centers on young diver Chris Lemons (played by Finn Cole), who, along with his team leader Duncan Allcock (Woody Harrelson) and fellow diver Dave Yuasa (Simu Liu), descends hundreds of feet to maintain undersea gas lines. A fierce storm on the surface causes the support vessel's Dynamic Positioning System to fail, pulling the ship and the divers' habitat away from the work site. During the ensuing chaos, Chris's umbilical line—his vital supply of breathing gas, heat, and communication—snaps, leaving him stranded on the dark seafloor with only minutes of emergency oxygen. The film chronicles the heroic efforts of the crew above and below the surface, particularly Duncan and Dave, as they battle the raging elements and technical failures in a desperate bid to rescue Chris, who miraculously survived without oxygen for nearly half an hour, a feat that medical experts are unable to fully explain. The cast also includes Cliff Curtis as Captain Andre Jenson. The film is a tale of resilience, teamwork, and the sheer will to survive against insurmountable odds.

No matter how hard you try, you can’t break up with your past. Oscar® winner Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All at Once, Loki) rockets into his first major leading man role as an unlikely hero, a seemingly mild-mannered realtor with a dark secret that he is desperate to leave behind. Spoiler alert: He won’t. From 87North--producers of the groundbreaking action films Nobody, Violent Night, Bullet Train, Atomic Blonde and The Fall Guy--comes a visceral, high-octane story of wrath and revenge. Quan stars as Marvin Gable, a realtor working the Milwaukee suburbs, where 'For Sale’ signs bloom. Gable receives a crimson envelope from Rose (Oscar® winner Ariana DeBose; West Side Story, Argylle), a former partner-in-crime that he had left for dead. She’s not happy. Now, Marvin is thrust back into a world of ruthless hitmen, filled with double-crosses and open houses turned into deadly warzones. With his brother Knuckles (Daniel Wu; Tomb Raider, Warcraft), a volatile crime lord, hunting him, Marvin must confront the choices that haunt him and the history he never truly buried. The film features a killer soundtrack and impressive and diverse cast that includes former NFL running back and Super Bowl champion Marshawn "Beast Mode" Lynch (Bottoms, 80 for Brady), Mustafa Shakir (Emancipation, Luke Cage), Lio Tipton (Crazy, Stupid, Love., Lucy), Rhys Darby (Jumanji: The Next Level, Yes Man), André Eriksen (Violent Night, The Trip) and Sean Astin (The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Perry Mason). Produced by 87North’s Kelly McCormick and David Leitch, Love Hurts is written by Matthew Murray (Sheltered, CloudStreet: Soaring the American West) & Josh Stoddard (Warrior, Kaleidoscope) and Luke Passmore (Archenemy, Slaughterhouse Rulez). Guy Danella (Violent Night) is also producing. The executive producer is Ben Ormand.

Back in 2019, director Alex Parkinson made a documentary about a deep-sea accident that happened in 2012, called LAST BREATH. He now has directed a feature film remake of that same accident, using the same name. It features "one of the most dangerous jobs on Earth", saturation divers who maintain undersea gas lines in the North Sea. The story revolves around a diving team as they begin a routine task: the salty Duncan (Woody Harrelson), the cold but focused David (Simu Liu), and the learning sponge Chris (Finn Cole). After an accident, one of them is left stranded with minutes of air left. It now comes down to a rescue or a recovery mission. I appreciated how the movie goes through the detailed process of the job. I also appreciated how Parkinson wasn't tempted to add things to make it a more entertaining movie, it would've felt inauthentic if he threw a random shark in the mix (unless it actually happened). I loved how realistic the lighting was on the seabed. It was dark AF, making you feel properly anxious and claustrophobic. The best parts of this movie are the moments of extreme tension. As the diver is losing air, you realize you also stopped breathing. LAST BREATH is a well-executed thriller that feels like a very "dad movie", if that makes sense. It has great acting and somewhat corny writing, but a had a great time. Remember, don't forget to breathe. It's a privilege.
