Lee 2024
Directed by Ellen Kuras and based on the biography The Lives of Lee Miller by her son Antony Penrose, Lee (2024) is a historical drama that chronicles a pivotal decade in the life of American fashion model turned war photojournalist Lee Miller. The film utilizes a framing device set in 1977, where an elderly, cynical Lee (Kate Winslet) is interviewed by a young journalist (Josh O'Connor), sparking a journey through her memories. The narrative begins in pre-war France, where Lee lives a bohemian lifestyle among surrealist artists like Pablo Picasso and Paul Éluard, and meets her future husband, Roland Penrose. However, as World War II erupts, Lee moves to London and joins British Vogue as a photographer. Frustrated by the limitations placed on female journalists, she eventually earns accreditation to the front lines. Alongside fellow photographer David E. Scherman, she documents the liberation of St. Malo and Paris, the horrors of the Buchenwald and Dachau concentration camps, and captures the famous, defiant image of herself bathing in Adolf Hitler's personal bathtub in Munich. The film explores her relentless pursuit of truth at a staggering personal cost, culminating in a reveal regarding the identity of her interviewer. The film features an acclaimed international cast led by Kate Winslet, who also served as a primary producer, alongside Andy Samberg in a rare dramatic role as photojournalist David E. Scherman and Alexander Skarsgård as Lee's husband, Roland Penrose. The supporting ensemble includes Marion Cotillard as Solange D'Ayen, Andrea Riseborough as British Vogue editor Audrey Withers, Josh O'Connor as Antony Penrose, and Samuel Barnett as Cecil Beaton. Despite a somewhat limited theatrical release, the film performed respectably for a historical biopic, earning approximately $24.7 million at the worldwide box office. A significant portion of this revenue came from international markets, particularly the UK, where it became a notable success for Sky Cinema, while the United States market, handled by Roadside Attractions, contributed roughly $2 million to the total. In worldwide streaming and digital availability, the film follows different paths depending on the region. In the United Kingdom and Ireland, Lee is available exclusively to subscribers on Sky Cinema and the NOW service. In the United States, the film is currently available for digital purchase or rental on major platforms such as Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Google Play. In other regions like Australia or parts of Europe, viewers can typically find the film through local VOD retailers or specialized platforms like Showmax in South Africa. As of late 2024, it is transitioning from its initial premium video-on-demand window to broader subscription-based streaming services globally.
