The Man in My Basement 2025
The Man in My Basement (2025) is a psychological thriller directed by Nadia Latif, marking her feature debut, and is an adaptation of the 2004 novel of the same name by Walter Mosley, who co-wrote the screenplay. The film centers on Charles Blakey (Corey Hawkins), an African American man in Sag Harbor, New York, who is down on his luck, unemployed, and facing foreclosure on his family's ancestral home. His life takes a dark and bizarre turn when a mysterious white businessman named Anniston Bennet (Willem Dafoe) arrives with a proposition: he will pay Charles a massive sum to rent the dusty, stand-up basement for the summer, no questions asked. Desperate for the money to clear his debts, Charles reluctantly agrees, but as he is drawn deeper into Bennet's strange world and peculiar requests, he unearths his own family's hidden history and heirlooms, confronting his personal traumas and the unsettling racial dynamics at play. The film uses its tense, two-hander setup—with Bennet's containment in the basement becoming a chilling, ambiguous master-servant dynamic—to explore complex themes of race, history, good versus evil, and what is truly forgotten, anchored by the intense performances of Hawkins and Dafoe. The movie premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and had a limited theatrical release in September 2025 before streaming on Hulu.
