The Possession of Hannah Grace 2018

The Possession of Hannah Grace (2018), released in some international markets as Cadaver, is a supernatural horror film that begins with a graphic, failed exorcism of the titular character, Hannah Grace (Kirby Johnson). During the ritual, the demon possessing her proves too powerful for the priests, leading her father, Grainger (Louis Herthum), to realize the only way to stop the entity is to kill his daughter. He suffocates her with a pillow, though a twitching finger at the end of the scene suggests the demon remains within the corpse. Three months later, Megan Reed (Shay Mitchell), an ex-police officer struggling with addiction and PTSD following the death of her partner, takes a graveyard shift job at the Boston Metro Hospital morgue. Her first night is interrupted when Hannah’s mangled and partially charred body is delivered for intake. As the night progresses, Megan experiences increasingly disturbing phenomena: motion-sensor lights flickering in the brutalist hallways, equipment malfunctions, and the horrifying realization that Hannah’s body is moving on its own. The demon within the corpse begins a killing spree to heal its vessel, claiming the lives of the security guard Dave (Maximillian McNamara), Megan’s friend and AA sponsor Nurse Lisa (Stana Katic), and EMT Randy (Nick Thune). Megan eventually discovers that the demon grows stronger with every soul it consumes. After her ex-boyfriend, Officer Andrew Kurtz (Grey Damon), arrives to help, Grainger also returns to the morgue to finally cremate the body. Though the demon kills Grainger, Megan manages to overcome her personal traumas and the entity's illusions, ultimately dragging Hannah into the incinerator and burning the body to ashes, which seemingly ends the possession. The film's cast is led by Shay Mitchell as Megan Reed, Kirby Johnson as Hannah Grace (who utilized her skills as a contortionist for the role's unsettling movements), Grey Damon as Andrew Kurtz, Stana Katic as Lisa Roberts, and Louis Herthum as Grainger. Other notable cast members include Nick Thune as Randy, Jacob Ming-Trent as Ernie, and Maximillian McNamara as Dave. Produced on a modest budget of approximately $7.7 million, the film was a significant commercial success despite mixed critical reviews. It grossed $14.8 million in the United States and Canada and $28.2 million in other territories, bringing its worldwide box office total to roughly $43 million. As of 2026, The Possession of Hannah Grace is available for streaming worldwide on several major platforms. In many regions, including the United States and India, it can be streamed on Netflix. It is also widely available for rent or purchase in 4K and HD on digital storefronts such as Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Google Play Movies, and Vudu (Fandango at Home). Depending on your specific territory, it may also be found on local services like Zee5 or Tubi.

This film should have been garbage, it is a new take on an old concept but the trailers weren't spectacular and seemed like a film that belongs in the horror wasteland of January. However, to be entirely honest it really isn't that bad and it's fair to say that for the most part it exceeded my low expectations. The central performance was quite good and most of the first and second act was pretty tense. The setting is solid and the director clearly was genuinely trying. That being said, the film does become extremely predictable, and not all the scares land. The third act explodes into cliche, and there are perhaps too many plot holes for me to just ignore. Overall, The Possession of Hannah Grace is better than the trailers suggest, it's a well acted enjoyable ride and does have some good scares, but the frequent jump scares, predictable flow of events and plot holes prevent this film from being anything memorable.
