The Ugly Stepsister (Norwegian title: Den stygge stesøsteren) is a 2025 satirical body horror film written and directed by Emilie Blichfeldt in her feature debut. A twisted, dark reimagining of the Brothers Grimm’s "Cinderella," the story centers on Elvira, the "plain" stepsister who lives in the shadow of her effortlessly beautiful stepsister, Agnes. When a royal ball is announced for Prince Julian to find a bride, Elvira’s ambitious and desperate mother, Rebekka, subjects Elvira to a series of increasingly gruesome and primitive "beautification" procedures—including sewing false eyelashes into her eyelids, restrictive corsetry, and swallowing a tapeworm—to win the Prince's favor. As the ball approaches, the film explores themes of "pretty privilege" and maternal toxicity, shifting the focus away from the classic romantic fantasy and toward a visceral, bloody competition for physical perfection where Agnes is treated with hostility for her natural beauty and Elvira is physically broken by her mother’s demands. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2025 and saw a limited theatrical release starting in March 2025 in Norway, followed by an April 18, 2025 release in the United States via IFC Films. As of late 2025, the film has grossed approximately $5.6 million worldwide. While it had a modest domestic (US) showing of roughly $300,000, it found a significant audience in international markets like Mexico ($2.8M) and Italy.
