We Bury the Dead 2025
We Bury the Dead is a survival thriller and zombie drama written and directed by Zak Hilditch, which had its world premiere at the SXSW Film & TV Festival in March 2025 before its wider theatrical rollout in early 2026. The story is set in the immediate aftermath of a catastrophic military experiment in Tasmania, where an accidental detonation of an experimental weapon kills nearly everyone on the island. The protagonist, Ava (Daisy Ridley), desperate to find her missing husband Mitch (Matt Whelan), joins a "body retrieval unit" to gain access to the restricted disaster zones. As she and her partner Clay (Brenton Thwaites) navigate the corpse-filled landscape, they discover that some of the deceased are reanimating. Unlike traditional zombies, these "undead" are described by some as having "unfinished business," remaining somewhat docile at first before potentially becoming violent. Ava’s journey leads her to a terrifying encounter with a grieving military officer named Riley (Mark Coles Smith), who has descended into madness while keeping his undead pregnant wife captive. After escaping, Ava eventually finds Mitch at a resort, only to discover evidence of his infidelity, providing a bitter sense of closure. The film concludes on a surreal and hopeful note when an undead woman gives birth to a perfectly healthy, living infant, which Ava rescues. The film features a strong lead performance by Daisy Ridley as Ava, supported by Brenton Thwaites as Clay and Mark Coles Smith as Riley. The supporting cast includes Matt Whelan as Mitch, Kym Jackson as an Australian military officer, and Chloe Hurst. The project was filmed primarily in Albany, Western Australia, which served as the stand-in for the devastated Tasmanian wilderness. The production was handled by The Penguin Empire and Campfire Studios, with a focus on blending the visceral horror of the zombie genre with a grounded exploration of grief and loss. Following its festival run in 2025, the film was acquired by Vertical Entertainment for North American distribution. It received a limited theatrical release in the United States on January 2, 2026, where it earned approximately $2.5 million in its opening weekend from 1,172 theaters, debuting at number 11 on the domestic charts. It is scheduled for release in Australia and New Zealand on February 5, 2026, followed by other international territories like Portugal. As of early 2026, the film is not yet available on major streaming platforms like Netflix or Max, as it is still within its exclusive theatrical window; however, a digital VOD release is expected following its international cinema run.
