300: Rise of an Empire (2014)

300: Rise of an Empire, released in 2014, is an American epic historical action film directed by Noam Murro. Serving as a sequel and companion piece to the 2006 film 300, it unfolds before, during, and after the events of its predecessor. The narrative is inspired by Frank Miller's graphic novel Xerxes and offers a fictionalized account of the Battle of Artemisium and the Battle of Salamis during the Greco-Persian Wars. The film centers on the Athenian general Themistocles (Sullivan Stapleton) as he leads the charge against the massive invading Persian forces commanded by Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro), now a god-king, and Artemisia (Eva Green), the fiercely vengeful commander of the Persian navy. Queen Gorgo (Lena Headey) of Sparta narrates the events, beginning with Themistocles's defeat of King Darius (Igal Naor) at the Battle of Marathon. Darius's son, Xerxes, driven by Artemisia's manipulation, undergoes a transformation to become a god-king and vows revenge. As Xerxes's forces advance, Themistocles seeks to unite all of Greece against the Persian threat, facing resistance and the might of Artemisia's formidable navy. The film portrays brutal naval battles and strategic maneuvers as Themistocles rallies Greek city-states, including Sparta, to confront the overwhelming Persian armada. Amidst the chaos, Artemisia, a Greek by birth who harbors deep resentment towards her homeland, emerges as a compelling antagonist, her path crossing with Themistocles in a series of intense and personal confrontations. The narrative interweaves with the events of 300, showing the broader scope of the Greco-Persian Wars and the pivotal battles that shaped its course, culminating in the decisive Battle of Salamis.
