After the Hunt 2025

Directed by Luca Guadagnino (Call Me by Your Name, Challengers), After the Hunt is a tense psychological thriller set within the high-pressure academic world of Yale University. The story follows Alma Imhoff, a brilliant and respected philosophy professor nearing a prestigious tenure appointment. Her carefully constructed life begins to unravel when her star student, Maggie, levels a shocking accusation of sexual misconduct against Hank, a charismatic colleague and Alma’s close friend. Caught in a moral crossfire, Alma must navigate the investigation while guarding a dark secret from her own past that threatens to destroy her career and relationships. Julia Roberts stars as the conflicted professor Alma, delivering a performance noted for its icy complexity. She is supported by Andrew Garfield as the accused colleague Hank and Ayo Edebiri (The Bear) as the accuser Maggie, with Michael Stuhlbarg and Chloë Sevigny rounding out the cast. The film has received a divided and somewhat lukewarm reception from critics, holding a Rotten Tomatoes score in the 40–50% range. While the cast—particularly Julia Roberts—has been praised for elevating the material with powerful acting, the screenplay by Nora Garrett has been criticized for being "muddled" and "pseudo-intellectual." Many reviewers felt the film struggled to balance its thriller elements with its heady academic setting, resulting in a story that felt more like a "tiresome" exercise in ambiguity than a compelling drama. However, some defenders appreciated its refusal to offer easy answers regarding "cancel culture" and institutional power dynamics, calling it a beautifully shot, if flawed, chamber piece. After the Hunt struggled significantly during its theatrical run in October 2025. With a production budget estimated between $70–$80 million, it grossed only roughly $9.1 million worldwide, marking it as a major box office disappointment for Amazon MGM Studios. Following this brief and quiet theatrical window, the film made its global streaming debut on Amazon Prime Video on November 20, 2025. It is now available to watch worldwide for all Prime subscribers.
