Blue Moon 2025
Blue Moon is a 2025 biographical drama film directed by Richard Linklater in his eleventh collaboration with star Ethan Hawke. The plot is a poignant, chamber piece set entirely in Sardi's bar on the evening of March 31, 1943. It focuses on the legendary lyricist Lorenz Hart (Ethan Hawke), whose career with composer Richard Rodgers is over. Hart, battling alcoholism and deep-seated insecurities about his sexual identity and appearance, confronts his despair as his former partner, Richard Rodgers (Andrew Scott), celebrates the triumphant opening night of his new, highly acclaimed musical with Oscar Hammerstein II, Oklahoma! The film primarily consists of Hart's complex, bitter, and witty conversations with the sympathetic barman, Eddie (Bobby Cannavale), and a young, beautiful Yale student named Elizabeth Weiland (Margaret Qualley), to whom he tragically tries to prove his devotion. The film's distinguished cast is led by an acclaimed, physically transformed Ethan Hawke, alongside Margaret Qualley, Bobby Cannavale, and Andrew Scott, who won the Silver Bear for Best Supporting Performance at the Berlin Film Festival for his portrayal of Rodgers. Critically, Blue Moon has been met with significant acclaim, currently holding an 89% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviewers praised Linklater's intimate direction, the sharp screenplay, and Hawke's tour-de-force performance, which many critics believe puts him in contention for a lead actor Oscar nomination. The film was distributed by Sony Pictures Classics and had a staggered theatrical release, starting with a limited run on October 17, 2025, before expanding. As a niche biographical drama, its box office gross was modest, totaling approximately $2 million worldwide. However, it achieved its commercial goals by generating strong buzz and staying in the awards conversation.Regarding streaming, the film has just exited its exclusive theatrical window. It became available for digital rental or purchase (VOD) on major platforms (Amazon Video, Apple TV, etc.) on November 25, 2025. It is not yet available on any subscription streaming services, but is expected to move to a platform like MUBI or a major aggregator in early 2026.

Ethan Hawke expertly delivered dialogue that never felt contrived or cringey. The character was grating at first - I kept wondering why anyone would indulge his self-absorption - but as the film unfolded, he grew on me and I understood the lure. This could've been a play, but I'm glad it wasn't. The use of Sardis was beautifully shot and gave the story momentum. It truly felt like watching the night unfold in real time.
