Hamnet 2025

The 2025 film Hamnet, directed by Chloé Zhao, features a star-studded cast led by Jessie Buckley as Agnes (Anne Hathaway) and Paul Mescal as William Shakespeare, alongside Emily Watson as Mary Shakespeare, Joe Alwyn as Bartholomew, David Wilmot as John Shakespeare, and Jacobi Jupe in the title role of Hamnet. The plot, adapted from Maggie O’Farrell’s acclaimed novel, centers on the 1580s in Stratford-upon-Avon, beginning with the unconventional romance between the eccentric, nature-loving healer Agnes and the struggling Latin tutor Will. Their marriage and subsequent move to a small domestic life are shattered when the bubonic plague strikes their family; while their daughter Judith initially falls ill, it is her twin brother, Hamnet, who ultimately succumbs to the disease in a selfless act of sibling devotion. The film follows the profound, isolating grief of Agnes as she remains in Stratford while Will finds success in the London theater world, eventually culminating in the creation of the play Hamlet. In a moving finale, Agnes travels to London to witness the first performance of the tragedy, realizing that the play is not a profanation of their son's name but a spectral, artistic tribute that allows both parents to finally process their loss. Regarding its commercial performance and availability, Hamnet has earned approximately $17.1 million at the worldwide box office as of early 2026, following its limited U.S. release on November 26, 2025, and its subsequent wide expansion in December. The film saw its international rollout continue into January 2026, with major theatrical releases in the United Kingdom (January 9) and Australia (January 15).Distributed by Focus Features in the United States and Universal Pictures internationally, the movie is currently transitioning into its home entertainment window. In the U.S., it is expected to begin streaming on Peacock by late January or February 2026, following its premium video-on-demand (PVOD) window on platforms like Apple TV and Amazon. Globally, the streaming availability varies by region; however, it is slated to appear on Sky/Now TV in the UK and other Universal-affiliated platforms worldwide throughout the first half of 2026.
