Hamnet 2025
The 2025 film Hamnet is a historical drama based on the 2020 novel of the same name by Maggie O'Farrell, which offers a fictionalized account of the life of William Shakespeare and his family. The story centers on the passionate but ultimately tragic relationship between William Shakespeare, played by Paul Mescal, and his wife Agnes Shakespeare (representing the historical Anne Hathaway), played by Jessie Buckley. The central conflict and emotional core of the film is the devastating death of their 11-year-old son, Hamnet (played by Jacobi Jupe), and how this profound personal grief is believed to have served as the inspiration for William's timeless tragedy, Hamlet. The film is directed and co-written by Academy Award-winner Chloé Zhao, who developed the screenplay alongside the novel's author, Maggie O'Farrell. The cast also features Emily Watson as Mary Shakespeare and Joe Alwyn in a supporting role, while Jacobi Jupe's real-life older brother, Noah Jupe, plays the actor portraying Hamlet in William's play, a casting choice intended to underscore Agnes's grief. Hamnet premiered at the 52nd Telluride Film Festival on August 29, 2025, and is scheduled for a limited theatrical release in the United States on November 26, 2025, followed by a wide release on December 12, 2025. It has garnered significant praise, particularly for its moving exploration of grief, the human side of Shakespeare, and the powerful performance by Jessie Buckley.
