Hurry Up Tomorrow 2025
Directed by Trey Edward Shults and released on May 16, 2025, Hurry Up Tomorrow is a psychological thriller that serves as a cinematic extension of Abel "The Weeknd" Tesfaye's sixth studio album. The film stars Abel Tesfaye as a fictionalized version of himself, a global pop icon grappling with severe insomnia, depression, and a vocal cord injury brought on by the psychological stress of a toxic breakup and the pressures of fame. The narrative follows Abel as he meets Anima (Jenna Ortega), a mysterious and volatile fan who stalks him before eventually pulling him into a surreal overnight odyssey through Los Angeles. Their journey begins as a romantic encounter but descends into a claustrophobic nightmare when Anima traps Abel in a hotel room to force a moral reckoning, using his own lyrics to confront his history of addiction and emotional detachment. The conflict peaks with the arrival of Abel’s manager, Lee (Barry Keoghan), who represents the artist's enabling ego and commercial drive; in a violent struggle, Anima kills Lee, symbolically severing Abel's ties to his destructive persona. The film concludes with Abel escaping a literal and metaphorical fire to find himself standing backstage, facing his reflection as he prepares to be reborn as Abel Tesfaye rather than "The Weeknd." The production features a high-profile supporting cast, with Jenna Ortega delivering a disturbing performance as the obsessed fan Anima and Barry Keoghan playing the intense, protective manager Lee. Riley Keough provides the voices for both the ex-girlfriend on the voicemail and Anima's mother, while the film is populated by cameos from music industry figures like Metro Boomin, Belly, and the electronic duo Justice. Despite the massive popularity of its lead, Hurry Up Tomorrow struggled at the box office, grossing approximately $7.8 million worldwide against a $15 million production budget, largely due to its experimental, "plot-free" structure and niche appeal to hardcore fans.Following its brief theatrical run, the film was released on premium digital platforms on June 6, 2025, and is currently available for streaming on Apple TV+ and Amazon Prime Video in most international territories.
