Project Hail Mary 2026
Based on the bestselling novel by Andy Weir, the Project Hail Mary film is scheduled to hit theaters and IMAX on March 20, 2026. Directed by the powerhouse duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) and written by Drew Goddard (The Martian), the movie stars Ryan Gosling as Ryland Grace, a middle-school science teacher who wakes up on a spaceship light-years from Earth with no memory of his identity or the mission. As his memories slowly return, he realizes he is the sole survivor of a desperate last-ditch effort to save humanity from a solar-dimming event that threatens to extinguish life on Earth. The film, produced by Amazon MGM Studios, is expected to blend hard science with humor and heart, much like The Martian. The supporting cast includes Sandra Hüller as the formidable Eva Stratt, alongside Lionel Boyce, Ken Leung, and Milana Vayntrub. Notably, the story features a pivotal relationship between Grace and an unexpected extraterrestrial ally named Rocky (portrayed via motion capture by James Ortiz), marking a major highlight for fans of the book. Filmed specifically for the IMAX format to capture the vast isolation of deep space, the production wrapped principal photography in late 2024 and is currently in post-production to perfect its extensive visual effects.
