Resurrection 2025

Directed by the visionary Chinese filmmaker Bi Gan, the 2025 film Resurrection (originally titled Kuang Ye Shi Dai or Wild Times) is a sprawling, avant-garde science fiction epic that serves as a love letter to the history of cinema. Set in a dystopian future where humanity has traded the ability to dream for biological immortality, the plot follows a mysterious woman known as Miss Shu (the "Big Other"), who belongs to a class of hunters tasked with eliminating "Deliriants"—rare individuals who have retained the capacity to dream. When she tracks down a monstrous, Nosferatu-like Deliriant (played by Jackson Yee), she is moved by his visions and chooses to grant him a "merciful death." She installs a film projector inside his body, allowing him to live out his final moments through a series of six cinematic dreams, each corresponding to a different human sense and a distinct era of film history. The film's narrative is structured through these surreal chapters, which span various genres and time periods. One chapter, representing Hearing, follows a wartime criminal named Qiu who is tortured by a commander for a mysterious suitcase containing a theremin; another, representing Smell, features an art thief named Mongrel who encounters a trickster spirit in a ruined Buddhist temple. The most acclaimed segment, representing Touch, is a millennial vampire romance set on New Year’s Eve, 1999, filmed in one of Bi Gan's signature, logic-defying long takes. In this dream, the protagonist becomes a hoodlum named Apollo who falls in love with a singer named Tai Zhaomei, eventually allowing her to bite him as they sail away into the night. The film concludes with a "Mind" chapter that blurs the lines between the dreamer and the observer, meditating on the "resurrection" of memory through art. The cast is led by two of Asia's biggest stars: Jackson Yee (Better Days), who delivers a transformative performance as the "Fantasmer" in its many reincarnations, and Shu Qi (The Assassin), who plays the dual role of Miss Shu and various figures within the dreams. They are supported by a prestigious ensemble including Li Gengxi as the vampire singer Tai Zhaomei, Mark Chao, Huang Jue, Chen Yongzhong, and Zhang Zhijian. The film's technical credits are equally notable, featuring a score by the electronic band M83 and cinematography by Dong Jingsong, which transitions between silent-era aesthetics, gritty noir, and vibrant, neon-soaked modernism. In terms of box office, Resurrection was a commercial success in its home market, debuting at number one in China during its November 2025 release. It grossed approximately $25.3 million in China alone, an impressive feat for an experimental three-hour film. Its international performance was more limited but prestigious; distributed by Janus Films and Sideshow in the United States, it earned about $335,000 in a limited platform release across major cities like New York and Los Angeles by early 2026. Worldwide, the film's total box office stands at roughly $25.7 million, bolstered by strong festival runs at Cannes (where it won a Special Jury Prize) and the New York Film Festival. As of January 2026, streaming availability for Resurrection varies by region. In the United States and Canada, the film is expected to join the Criterion Channel in early 2026 due to the distributor's partnership with the service, and it is currently available for premium VOD rental on platforms like Apple TV and Fandango at Home. In Europe, international rights are handled by Les Films du Losange, with the movie appearing on MUBI in several territories. In China, the film is widely available on domestic platforms like Tencent Video and iQIYI.
