The Electric State 2025

The Electric State is a 2025 American science fiction action-adventure film directed by Anthony and Joe Russo (known for their work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe) and is loosely based on the 2018 illustrated novel by Simon Stålenhag. The movie was released on Netflix on March 14, 2025, after a world premiere on February 24, 2025. Set in an alternate, retro-futuristic 1990s following a war between humans and robots, the film centers on Michelle Greene (played by Millie Bobby Brown), an orphaned teenager who lives in foster care and resists the pervasive Neurocaster virtual reality technology. Michelle's life changes when a seemingly simple robot named Cosmo arrives, revealing that her long-lost brother, Christopher, who was presumed dead in a car crash, is actually alive and his consciousness is being exploited by Ethan Skate (Stanley Tucci), the CEO of the powerful tech company Sentre, to power their Neurocaster technology and an army of drones. Michelle, along with Cosmo, embarks on a cross-country journey through the dystopian American West to find and rescue her brother, eventually teaming up with John D. Keats (Chris Pratt), a mysterious former robot war soldier and smuggler, and his own robot companion. The film, which has a reported budget of $320 million, features a large ensemble cast that also includes Ke Huy Quan, Jason Alexander, Woody Harrelson, Anthony Mackie, and Giancarlo Esposito.

Like other user reviews I can say this is no epic or a particularly memorable movie but it's not bad. I have not read the book so cannot speak to it's faithfulness to the original story but the dialogue is funny at times. I actually find chris pratts performance better than in most movies. More self deprecating and with nuanced quirkiness. Its an action/adventure movie so i never really understand why critics hold these romps to the standard of cinema. This is not cinema, this is simply a good action/adventure flick with some funny bits. Its not a dark movie but not overly campy either. You can absolutely see where the budget went. The cgi is flawless and plentiful which i always enjoy.
