Woody Woodpecker Goes to Camp 2024
Directed by Jon Rosenbaum, this live-action/CGI hybrid comedy serves as a standalone sequel to the 2017 film, bringing the iconic laugh back to the screen. The story begins when Woody Woodpecker is kicked out of his forest home for being too mischievous and selfish. In search of a new place to live, he stumbles upon Camp Woo Hoo, a struggling summer camp for "misfits" that is on the verge of being shut down by an inspector. To save his new home, Woody must learn the value of teamwork and help the campers win the annual "Wilderness Games" against the rival military-style Camp Hoo Rah. However, chaos ensues when the villainous Buzz Buzzard arrives, posing as a chef to steal a hidden treasure buried beneath the camp. Eric Bauza voices the titular bird, with Kevin Michael Richardson as Buzz Buzzard and Tom Kenny as Wally Walrus. The live-action cast features Mary-Louise Parker (Weeds) as the camp director Angie and Josh Lawson (Mortal Kombat) as the rival camp leader Zane. The film received generally negative reviews from critics, often described as a "generic" and "annoying" kids' movie that relies too heavily on slapstick and toilet humor. While some younger viewers enjoyed the fast-paced antics, critics felt the script was lazy and derivative of better summer camp films like Meatballs or Addams Family Values. The integration of the animated characters with the live-action world was also critiqued for looking "cheap" in certain scenes. However, long-time fans of the franchise appreciated the inclusion of classic characters like Buzz Buzzard and Wally Walrus, who were absent from the 2017 predecessor. Woody Woodpecker Goes to Camp was released exclusively on Netflix on April 12, 2024, bypassing a traditional theatrical run. As a direct-to-streaming title, it does not have standard box office gross figures. Upon release, it performed well on the platform's internal charts, quickly entering the Netflix Global Top 10 for English-language films and finding a strong audience among families with young children.
