Barbarian 2022
Barbarian is a 2022 American horror film written and directed by Zach Cregger in his solo debut, starring Georgina Campbell, Bill Skarsgård, and Justin Long. The plot begins with Tess (Campbell), a young woman arriving late at night in a rundown Detroit neighborhood for a job interview. She finds the Airbnb rental she booked has been double-booked with a man named Keith (Skarsgård) already staying there. Against her better judgment, she agrees to stay the night, but soon discovers a hidden basement with a terrifying secret: a labyrinth of subterranean tunnels that contain a monstrous, inbred figure known as "The Mother" (Matthew Patrick Davis), the product of multi-generational incest carried out by the original owner, Frank (Richard Brake), who stalked and abducted women decades ago. The film then shifts its focus to the house's current owner, AJ (Long), a disgraced Hollywood actor who comes to inspect the property before selling it, only to become the next victim captured by the creature. The story explores themes of sexual abuse, misogyny, and trauma, with the ultimate monster being revealed not just as the creature, but the depraved men—Frank and, in his own way, AJ—who created and perpetuated the horror. The film was well-received by critics and became a box office success, earning over $45 million worldwide against a small budget.

UGH .... so close - SO CLOSE! But in the end, no cigar. All that potential and solid storytelling dissolving into to a nonsensical, clumsy, rushed, and ultimately unsatisfying conclusion, implementing all of the worst elements of horror movies. That's what disappoints the most. This movie held so much promise and had such a great start and journey all the way up until the end, but sadly the writer(s) somehow couldn't find the way to keep that strong storytelling up to par all the way through to the end. It wasn't that I disliked the end result. It was the clumsy way the screenplay got us there that left a lot to be desired. I was rolling my eyes on multiple occasions during parts of the final act.
