Corina 2024
Corina is a 2024 Mexican comedy-drama film that marks the feature directorial and co-writing debut of Urzula Barba Hopfner. Set in Guadalajara around the year 2000, the story centers on Corina (played by Naian González Norvind), a young woman in her twenties who suffers from severe agoraphobia, an anxiety disorder that has limited her world to the small, familiar block surrounding her home and her job at a local publishing house. Her isolated routine is shattered when she makes a serious, accidental error—tampering with the ending of the company's most successful book series—which jeopardizes her job and that of her colleagues. Forced to confront her deepest fears to fix the mistake, Corina must venture outside her comfort zone and embark on a journey to find the mysterious, reclusive author. Aided by her empathetic co-worker, Carlos (played by Cristo Fernández), her reluctant odyssey becomes a heartwarming and quirky coming-of-age story about small acts of courage, overcoming trauma, and embracing the unknown world outside. The film premiered at the Guadalajara International Film Festival (FICG) in June 2024, where it won the Best Jalisco Film award, and it also earned the Audience Award for Global at the SXSW Film Festival.
