Godzilla Minus One 2023

Godzilla Minus One, a 2023 Japanese epic kaiju film, unfolds in post-war Japan as the nation grapples with devastation. Directed, written, and featuring visual effects by Takashi Yamazaki, this is the 37th installment in the Godzilla franchise, Toho's 33rd Godzilla film, and the fifth of the Reiwa era. The movie plunges into the depth of despair in a Japan that has been reduced to zero following World War II, only to face a new crisis with the emergence of Godzilla, a giant monster born from the horrific power of the atomic bomb. The narrative centers on Koichi Shikishima, a former kamikaze pilot portrayed by Ryunosuke Kamiki, who is haunted by post-traumatic stress disorder after a terrifying encounter with Godzilla. He finds himself amidst a country struggling to rebuild, where the appearance of this monstrous entity throws them into an even more negative state. Shikishima's journey intertwines with Noriko Oishi (Minami Hamabe), a woman who lost her home in the bombings, and an orphaned baby named Akiko. Together, they form an unlikely family in the ruins of Tokyo. As Godzilla unleashes its destructive power upon Ginza, Shikishima, along with a determined group of war veterans and a resourceful naval engineer, Kenji Noda (Hidetaka Yoshioka), devises a desperate plan to stop the colossal creature. The film explores themes of survival, guilt, and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of overwhelming destruction, all set against the backdrop of a nation trying to heal from the wounds of war while confronting a terrifying new threat. The cast also includes Yuki Yamada as Shirō Mizushima, Munetaka Aoki as Sōsaku Tachibana, Sakura Ando as Sumiko Ōta, and Kuranosuke Sasaki as Yōji Akitsu.

This film should have been garbage, it is a new take on an old concept but the trailers weren't spectacular and seemed like a film that belongs in the horror wasteland of January. However, to be entirely honest it really isn't that bad and it's fair to say that for the most part it exceeded my low expectations. The central performance was quite good and most of the first and second act was pretty tense. The setting is solid and the director clearly was genuinely trying. That being said, the film does become extremely predictable, and not all the scares land. The third act explodes into cliche, and there are perhaps too many plot holes for me to just ignore. Overall, The Possession of Hannah Grace is better than the trailers suggest, it's a well acted enjoyable ride and does have some good scares, but the frequent jump scares, predictable flow of events and plot holes prevent this film from being anything memorable.
