Madame Web 2024

Directed by S.J. Clarkson, Madame Web is a standalone origin story within Sony's Spider-Man Universe (SSU) that serves as a suspense thriller rather than a traditional superhero movie. The plot follows Cassandra "Cassie" Webb, a Manhattan paramedic who develops the power of clairvoyance after a near-death experience. Forced to confront secrets about her past, she must protect three young women—Julia Cornwall, Anya Corazon, and Mattie Franklin—from Ezekiel Sims, a villain with similar precognitive abilities who is hunting them down to prevent his own future death. Dakota Johnson stars as the titular clairvoyant Cassandra Webb. She is joined by Sydney Sweeney (Julia), Isabela Merced (Anya), and Celeste O’Connor (Mattie) as the future Spider-Women, with Tahar Rahim playing the antagonist Ezekiel Sims and Adam Scott appearing as a younger Ben Parker. The film received overwhelmingly negative reviews from critics and audiences alike, holding a "Rotten" score of approximately 11% on Rotten Tomatoes. It was widely criticized for its "clunky" exposition, questionable visual effects, and a script that many found unintentionaly funny. Critics noted that despite being marketed as a superhero team-up, the three young leads never actually suit up in their costumes for more than a brief vision sequence. However, the film developed a cult following as a "so-bad-it's-good" camp classic, with Dakota Johnson’s seemingly disinterested press tour becoming a viral sensation in itself. Madame Web was a significant box office bomb. Against a production budget of roughly $80 million (excluding marketing), it grossed only $15.3 million in its domestic opening weekend and finished its run with a worldwide total of approximately $100.5 million.
