Nouvelle Vague 2025
Nouvelle Vague is a 2025 comedy-drama film directed by the acclaimed American filmmaker Richard Linklater (known for Boyhood and Dazed and Confused). The film is a stylish and affectionate tribute to the French New Wave era, specifically focusing on the chaotic and groundbreaking production of Jean-Luc Godard's iconic 1960 debut feature, Breathless. Set in Paris in 1959, the movie chronicles the unconventional process of the young film critic-turned-director, Jean-Luc Godard (played by Guillaume Marbeck), as he convinces producer Georges de Beauregard to fund a low-budget feature from a basic outline co-written with François Truffaut. The main cast features Guillaume Marbeck as Jean-Luc Godard, Zoey Deutch as American actress Jean Seberg, and Aubry Dullin as Jean-Paul Belmondo. Linklater meticulously recreates the era by shooting the film in black-and-white and the Academy ratio (4:3 aspect ratio), mimicking the aesthetic of the original New Wave movement. The narrative centers on the day-to-day filming, highlighting Godard's improvisational style, his disregard for a finished script, and the resulting tension with the cast and crew, including an exasperated Jean Seberg. The film had its world premiere at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival and was released theatrically in France on October 8, 2025, and in the United States on October 31, 2025, before streaming on Netflix starting November 14, 2025.
