Plankton: The Movie 2025
Directed by Dave Needham, this animated musical comedy spin-off shifts the spotlight to Bikini Bottom’s tiniest villain. The story explores the origin and marital dynamics of Sheldon J. Plankton and his computer wife, Karen. When Plankton’s latest scheme to steal the Krabby Patty secret formula fails yet again, Karen finally loses patience with his incompetence. She removes her empathy chip, evolves into a formidable "Mega-Karen" mech, and launches her own ruthless plan for world domination. To save the world (and his marriage), Plankton is forced to team up with his frenemy SpongeBob SquarePants and the rest of the gang. The film features the beloved original voice cast, including Mr. Lawrence (Plankton), Jill Talley (Karen), Tom Kenny (SpongeBob), Bill Fagerbakke (Patrick), and Clancy Brown (Mr. Krabs). The film has received a mixed-to-positive reception, generally considered a step up from the previous Sandy Cheeks movie. Critics praised the decision to focus on the unique, dysfunctionally sweet relationship between Plankton and Karen, with many highlighting Jill Talley's expanded role as a standout. The film is also noted for its creative visual style, which mixes standard CGI with sequences of 2D animation, claymation, and live-action, as well as its catchy original songs. However, negative reviews criticized the runtime, feeling the story was "stretched thin" to feature length and that some of the humor relied too heavily on "random" gags rather than the wit of the early series. It is widely viewed as a fun, if non-essential, watch for fans. Plankton: The Movie was released exclusively on Netflix on March 7, 2025. Because it bypassed a wide theatrical release in the US and Europe, it does not have a traditional domestic box office gross. However, it did see a limited theatrical run in select international territories (such as China), where it grossed approximately $1.5 million. upon its streaming debut, it was a significant hit for Netflix, reaching the #1 spot on the platform's global English-language film charts during its opening week.

Plankton wants to steal the Krabby Patty formula again and take over the world. It goes badly and Karen has had enough. She magnetizes the Chum Bucket which attracts all the metal in Bikini Bottom. She turns into a mega three-headed evil robot using all the metal to create a giant robot. In flashback, Karen is shown to be a calculator and a potato. This is a Spongebob musical concentrating on Plankton and Karen. They used a variety of animation styles. It's interesting. The story isn't all that much. I'm not sure that it deserves a full movie treatment. I do like some of the songs. Maybe this is better as different smaller segments. It does run a bit long.
