Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie 2024
Directed by Liza Johnson, this live-action/animated hybrid adventure shifts the spotlight to Bikini Bottom's favorite squirrel scientist. The story kicks off when the entire town of Bikini Bottom is suddenly scooped out of the ocean by a giant mechanical claw. Sandy Cheeks and SpongeBob SquarePants, who manage to escape capture, must venture to Sandy’s home state of Texas to rescue their friends. There, they uncover a villainous plot by Sue Nahmee, an evil CEO who plans to clone the sea creatures and sell them as genetically modified toy pets. Carolyn Lawrence and Tom Kenny reprise their iconic voice roles as Sandy and SpongeBob, respectively. They are joined by the usual ensemble (Clancy Brown, Bill Fagerbakke, Rodger Bumpass) and new celebrity additions, including Wanda Sykes as the antagonist Sue Nahmee, Johnny Knoxville as Sandy's brother Randy, and Craig Robinson as Pa Cheeks. The film received a mixed-to-negative reception from critics, holding a Rotten Tomatoes score of approximately 56%. While it was praised by some as "innocuous enough" for young children and credited for finally giving Sandy a lead role, it was widely criticized for its "lazy" script and lackluster visual effects. Reviewers frequently compared it unfavorably to previous theatrical SpongeBob movies, noting that the blend of CGI and live-action felt "cheap" and that the humor lacked the multi-layered wit that usually appeals to adult fans of the series. It is generally considered a minor entry in the franchise, best suited for very young viewers. Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie bypassed a wide theatrical release in the US, premiering exclusively on Netflix on August 2, 2024. Despite the lukewarm reviews, it was a massive streaming hit, debuting at #1 on Netflix’s global charts. It garnered over 12.8 million views in its opening weekend and surpassed 30 million views within its first three weeks. It did see a limited theatrical release in select international territories (grossing roughly $4 million), but its primary success and availability remain strictly digital.

I don't know if it's that I'm growing out of the franchise or what, but this was really bad. Don't get me wrong. I loved watching SpongeBob growing up and it had a special place in my heart. I'm hoping it's just a a Netflix issue, but again, this sucked. If you're going in here expecting the classic SpongeBob shenanigans you're going to get that. It's the human stuff that sucked. It was cheap, low quality, poorly written, and even cringe inducing. For a SpongeBob movie, you need to focus on your main characters. I did however like the Cheeks family. The writing just wasn't good. I just don't think SpongeBob and humans mix well. It just seems like the SpongeBob franchise is one that is hard to translate from short TV episodes to full length movies.
