Swiped 2025
Swiped 2025 biographical drama film Swiped, directed by Rachel Lee Goldenberg, offers a dramatized account of the early career of entrepreneur Whitney Wolfe Herd, the founder and former CEO of the dating app Bumble. The plot follows Whitney Wolfe (played by Lily James) as she breaks into the male-dominated tech industry in the early 2010s. The story initially focuses on her integral role as the Director of Marketing in the launch and meteoric rise of the popular "swipe-centric" dating app, Tinder, where she is a co-founder. However, the corporate environment turns toxic due to misogyny, and her relationship with a fellow co-founder, Justin Mateen (Jackson White), leads to a devastating personal and professional crisis involving sexual harassment and a subsequent lawsuit. Bound by an NDA after her departure from Tinder, the film chronicles her "dark night of the soul" before she is approached by Russian tech magnate Andrey Andreev (Dan Stevens). Motivated by her challenging experience and a desire to create a safer, female-empowered space, she co-founds Bumble, a dating app where women must make the first move, eventually finding success and becoming a self-made billionaire. The cast also notably includes Ben Schnetzer as Sean Rad, a Tinder co-founder, and Myha’la as Tisha, a colleague who provides a critical perspective. Critics gave the film mixed reviews, praising Lily James's compelling performance but often criticizing the movie for being too shallow, basic, or a "girlboss Social Network" that lacks the ambition and nuance to fully explore its subject or the wider cultural impact of the apps. The film had its world premiere at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival on September 9, 2025, and was a streaming exclusive. It was released in the United States on Hulu on September 19, 2025, and internationally on Disney+ and JioHotstar (in India), quickly becoming a major streaming hit despite the mixed critical reception.
