The Mastermind 2025

Set in a quiet Massachusetts suburb in 1970, Kelly Reichardt's "The Mastermind" is an anti-heist film that focuses more on the agonizing aftermath and character study than the crime itself. The story centers on James Blaine "J.B." Mooney (Josh O'Connor), an unemployed carpenter and struggling family man who, fueled by a mixture of entitlement and a desire to escape his middle-class life, plots to steal four paintings by Arthur Dove from a local art museum. With money borrowed from his parents and a planned but ill-fated getaway, J.B. hires three men—Guy Hickey, Ronnie Gibson, and a getaway driver who backs out—to execute the robbery. The heist is completed within the film's first half-hour, but things quickly go haywire: the stolen art proves more difficult to handle than anticipated, and J.B. is immediately exposed as the "mastermind" when one of his accomplices, Ronnie Gibson, is arrested during a separate bank robbery and names him. J.B.'s life unravels as he tries to evade capture, going on the run and relying on friends like Fred (John Magaro) and Maude (Gaby Hoffmann) for shelter. The film chronicles his clumsy attempts to fence the art and maintain control, ultimately portraying him as a narcissist whose ambitions crumble, forcing him to confront the cost of his self-interested actions, which primarily fall upon his wife, Terri (Alana Haim), and family. The film culminates with J.B. desperate and on the run, stealing from an elderly woman and escaping into a crowd of anti-Vietnam War protesters, highlighting his unfocused rebellion against the social and political turmoil of the era. The film was written and directed by acclaimed auteur Kelly Reichardt. The main cast features Josh O'Connor as James Blaine "J.B." Mooney and Alana Haim as his wife, Terri Mooney. Supporting roles include John Magaro as Fred, Gaby Hoffmann as Maude, Bill Camp as Judge William Mooney (J.B.'s father), and Hope Davis as Sarah Mooney (J.B.'s mother). The film was distributed globally by MUBI. "The Mastermind" had its world premiere at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival and was released in a limited theatrical run in the United States on October 17, 2025, and in the United Kingdom on October 24, 2025, by MUBI. Its worldwide box office performance, as of early December 2025, totaled approximately $1.7 million, with around $1.1 million domestically and over $600,000 internationally. The film is available for streaming worldwide exclusively on MUBI, beginning December 12, 2025.
