The Shadow's Edge 2025
Directed by Larry Yang, The Shadow's Edge (known in China as Bǔfēng Zhuīyǐng) is a tense action-crime thriller that serves as a reimagining of the 2007 Hong Kong classic Eye in the Sky. The story follows Wong Tak-Chung, a legendary but retired police surveillance expert living a quiet life with his dogs. He is pulled back into the fray to help a high-tech unit catch "The Shadow," a brilliant criminal mastermind who has been orchestrating a series of invisible heists targeting millions in cryptocurrency. Jackie Chan stars as the veteran tracker Wong, shifting away from his usual comedic persona for a more grounded, tactical role. He faces off against Tony Leung Ka-fai (The Lover, Cold War) as the cunning antagonist. The cast also features rising star Zhang Zifeng as the rookie officer whom Wong mentors, alongside K-pop star Wen Junhui (Jun from SEVENTEEN) and Ci Sha in key supporting roles. The film has garnered a generally positive-to-mixed reception, often praised as a return to form for Jackie Chan. Critics have highlighted the "electrifying chemistry" between the two leads, noting that watching veterans Chan and Leung trade wits is the movie's greatest strength. The action sequences are described as tactical and suspenseful rather than purely acrobatic, fitting Chan's age well. However, some reviews have criticized the film for slipping into "melodramatic tropes," particularly regarding the father-daughter dynamic between Wong and his rookie protégé, which some felt slowed down the pacing of the cat-and-mouse thriller elements. It holds a solid reputation among fans of Hong Kong cinema but hasn't broken out as a critical darling globally. Released in China in August 2025, the film was a significant commercial success in its home market, grossing approximately $158.7 million worldwide by the end of the year. It dominated the Chinese box office for several weeks but saw only a limited theatrical footprint in North America and Europe. As of November 2025, it has not yet landed on major global streaming services like Netflix or Disney+ in the West. It is currently available on VOD platforms in parts of Asia and the Middle East (via services like Shahid and Yango Play) and is expected to make its US digital debut on rental platforms (Amazon, Apple TV) in early 2026.
