Totally Killer 2023
Directed by Nahnatchka Khan and produced by Blumhouse Television, Totally Killer is a 2023 slasher-comedy that blends time-travel tropes with "Scream-style" meta-horror. The film was released worldwide as an Amazon Original on Prime Video on October 6, 2023, following its premiere at Fantastic Fest. Because it was a direct-to-streaming title, it did not have a wide theatrical release, though it saw a negligible international box office of approximately $2,697 from a limited run in Spain. Despite the lack of traditional ticket sales, the film was a major streaming success, consistently ranking as the #1 movie on Prime Video during its release month and receiving positive reviews for its witty commentary on the cultural gap between Gen Z and the 1980s. The plot follows Jamie Hughes (played by Kiernan Shipka), a rebellious teenager in 2023 whose overprotective mother, Pam, is a survivor of the 1987 "Sweet Sixteen" murders that claimed the lives of three of her best friends. On Halloween night, the masked killer returns and murders Pam in their home. While mourning, Jamie helps her friend Amelia with a school project—a functioning time machine. When the killer attacks Jamie at the laboratory, she hides inside the machine, which accidentally activates and transports her back to 1987. Realizing she has a chance to save her mother, Jamie adopts the alias "Colette" and infiltrates her mother's high school social circle. She is shocked to discover that the teenage version of her mother (Olivia Holt) and her friends—Tiffany, Marisa, and Heather—were actually the school’s mean-spirited bullies. Jamie teams up with the teenage version of Amelia’s mother, Lauren, to build a way home while simultaneously trying to stop the murders. As the killings begin, Jamie’s interference causes the timeline to shift; though she fails to save Tiffany, her actions lead to the killer targeting Heather instead of Marisa. In a climactic showdown at a local amusement park, the first killer is revealed to be the teenage Doug, who was seeking revenge for his girlfriend Trish, who died in a drunk driving accident caused by the group's bullying. However, a second killer appears and murders Marisa. This second killer is revealed to be Chris Dubasage from the year 2023. Chris, a true-crime podcaster, had murdered the adult Pam in the present and traveled back in time to ensure the original murders occurred so he could continue generating content for his podcast. After a brutal fight inside the "Quantum Drop" gravitron ride (which Lauren converted into a time machine), Jamie kills Chris and returns to 2023. She arrives in an altered present where her parents got together earlier, her mom is alive, and she now has an older brother named Jamie (causing her to rename herself Colette). The cast features Kiernan Shipka as Jamie/Colette and Olivia Holt as the teenage Pam, with Julie Bowen appearing as the adult Pam in the 2023 timeline. Randall Park plays the skeptical Sheriff Dennis Lim, while Lochlyn Munro and Charlie Gillespie share the role of Jamie’s father, Blake, in the present and past respectively. The supporting cast includes Kelcey Mawema as Amelia, Troy Leigh-Anne Johnson as teen Lauren, Liana Liberato as Tiffany, Stephi Chin-Salvo as Marisa, and Anna Diaz as Heather. The film's script, penned by David Matalon, Sasha Perl-Raver, and Jen D'Angelo, was praised for its balance of gore and humor, effectively serving as a love letter to 80s slashers like Friday the 13th while poking fun at the decade's lack of modern social awareness.
