Uprising (Jeon, Ran) 2024
The 2024 South Korean historical war action film, Uprising, is a sweeping epic set during the late 16th-century Joseon Dynasty, specifically during the Imjin War (Japanese invasions of Korea). Directed by Kim Sang-man and co-written and produced by the acclaimed Park Chan-wook, the film delves into a complex and tragic friendship torn apart by societal class and the chaos of war. The story centers on two childhood friends: Cheon-yeong (played by Gang Dong-won), a nobi slave with extraordinary swordsmanship skills, and Jong-ryeo (played by Park Jeong-min), the son of a high-ranking military official and Cheon-yeong's master. Despite their different social standings, they forge an unlikely bond over their shared passion for sword fighting. However, their friendship is tested and ultimately shattered by a series of betrayals and misunderstandings. When Japan invades Korea in 1592, the two men find themselves on opposing sides. Cheon-yeong joins the Righteous Army, a civilian militia, hoping to earn his freedom by fighting for his country. He rises as a heroic figure, a symbol of the common people's resistance. In contrast, Jong-ryeo remains loyal to the corrupt and cowardly King Seonjo (played by Cha Seung-won). The film highlights the stark contrast between the internal "uprising" of the people against the Joseon dynasty's rigid class system and the external war against the Japanese invaders. The central conflict intensifies when a misunderstanding leads Jong-ryeo to believe Cheon-yeong is responsible for the death of his family, turning their former friendship into a fierce rivalry driven by revenge. Uprising is known for its intense and meticulously choreographed action sequences, particularly the sword fights, which are a major highlight. The film was selected as the opening feature of the 29th Busan International Film Festival and had its worldwide release on Netflix on October 11, 2024. The film was well-received for its strong performances, particularly from its lead actors, and its ability to blend a personal, emotional story with a large-scale historical backdrop, though some critics felt the narrative could be disjointed at times.
