Dead Man's Wire 2025
Directed by two-time Academy Award nominee Gus Van Sant, Dead Man’s Wire (2025) is a gripping true-crime thriller that dramatizes the infamous 1977 Indianapolis hostage crisis. The film stars Bill Skarsgård as Tony Kiritsis, a disgruntled real estate developer who, after feeling exploited by a corporate land deal, kidnaps mortgage broker Richard Hall (Dacre Montgomery). The title refers to the harrowing "dead man's wire" Kiritsis used—a sawed-off shotgun rigged with a wire around Hall’s neck so that the weapon would discharge if Kiritsis was shot or incapacitated. Over a 63-hour standoff, the film explores the media circus that ensued as Kiritsis paraded his hostage through the streets and on live television, demanding a public apology and $5 million. The ensemble cast features Al Pacino as the elder M.L. Hall, Colman Domingo as radio personality Fred Temple, and Cary Elwes as Detective Mike Grable. Praised for its authentic 1970s period detail and Skarsgård’s "fearless" performance, the film serves as a darkly humorous yet tragic critique of corporate greed and the American dream, drawing frequent comparisons to the classic Dog Day Afternoon.
