Kokuho 2025
The 2025 Japanese drama film Kokuho (National Treasure) is an epic, three-hour feature directed by Lee Sang-il, with a screenplay by Satoko Okudera, based on the novel of the same name by Shuichi Yoshida. The film stars Ryo Yoshizawa as Kikuo Tachibana, alongside Ryusei Yokohama, Ken Watanabe, Mitsuki Takahata, Shinobu Terajima, and Min Tanaka. The plot, spanning 50 years, follows Kikuo, the son of a yakuza boss, who is orphaned and taken in as an apprentice by a renowned Kabuki actor, Hanai Hanjiro, played by Ken Watanabe. Despite his non-traditional lineage, Kikuo, who specializes as an onnagata (a male actor playing female roles), dedicates his life to mastering the demanding art of Kabuki alongside Hanjiro's biological son, Shunsuke Ōgaki (Ryusei Yokohama). The film explores their lifelong rivalry, brotherhood, and the sacrifices involved as Kikuo rises through the ranks, enduring scandals and glory, to eventually earn the prestigious title of "Living National Treasure." Kokuho had its world premiere in the Directors' Fortnight section of the 2025 Cannes Film Festival and was released theatrically in Japan on June 6, 2025, where it became a critical and commercial success.
