Monster Summer 2024

Directed by David Henrie, Monster Summer (originally titled Boys of Summer) is a 2024 adventure-horror film that follows Noah Reed (Mason Thames), an aspiring young journalist living in Martha's Vineyard in 1997. The plot kicks off when a mysterious force begins targeting local children, starting with Noah’s friend Ben, who is left in a "zombified," catatonic state after an encounter with a supposed witch. Seeking the truth, Noah teams up with Gene Carruthers (Mel Gibson), a reclusive, retired detective haunted by the past disappearance of his own son. Together with friends Sammy (Abby James Witherspoon) and Eugene (Julian Lerner), they investigate a series of red herrings—including a suspicious new boarder, Miss Halverson (Lorraine Bracco)—before discovering that the true "monster" is a soul-sucking entity draining the life force from the island's youth. The film concludes with a high-stakes confrontation where the kids and Gene defeat the entity, restoring the affected children to health and allowing Noah to finally follow in his late father’s investigative footsteps. The cast features a blend of veteran stars and rising talent, led by Mason Thames (The Black Phone) and Oscar-winner Mel Gibson. Supporting performances include Lorraine Bracco (The Sopranos) as the mysterious tenant, Nora Zehetner as Noah's mother, and cameos by Kevin James as a local newspaper editor and Patrick Renna as an umpire. Financially, the film had a modest theatrical run after its October 4, 2024, release, grossing approximately $1.33 million worldwide, with over 90% of that total coming from the domestic US box office. Globally, it saw limited theatrical releases in markets like Australia and Germany throughout early 2025.For viewers looking to watch at home, Monster Summer moved to Digital VOD platforms (like Amazon and Apple TV) in November 2024 and is available for streaming or purchase on various regional video-on-demand services.
