The Huntsman: Winter's War 2016

The Huntsman: Winter's War (2016) serves as both a prequel and a sequel to 2012's Snow White and the Huntsman, expanding the dark fantasy lore of the Enchanted Forest. The story begins long before the events of the first film, revealing that Queen Ravenna has a younger sister, Freya. Unlike Ravenna, Freya possesses no magical abilities and is in love with a nobleman, with whom she has a child. However, after her lover seemingly murders their infant daughter, Freya’s grief unleashes latent cryokinetic powers, transforming her into the "Ice Queen." She flees to the north, where she builds a frozen kingdom and raises an army of child soldiers known as Huntsmen, forbidding them from ever feeling love. Among her most elite warriors are Eric and Sara, who eventually fall in love and attempt to escape. Freya discovers their betrayal and uses her magic to create a wall of ice, forcing Eric to watch Sara die (though this is revealed to be a magical illusion). Fast-forwarding to the years after Ravenna’s death in the first film, the Magic Mirror is stolen while being transported to a safe sanctuary. Eric is recruited by King William to track it down. He eventually reunites with a very much alive Sara, who believes Eric abandoned her. Together, they discover that Ravenna’s spirit has been preserved within the mirror. Freya inadvertently resurrects Ravenna, leading to a clash between the sisters when Freya discovers that Ravenna was actually responsible for the death of her child to ensure she remained the "fairest of them all." In the final battle, Freya turns against Ravenna, assisting Eric and Sara in destroying the mirror and ending the sisters' reigns of terror. The film features a star-studded cast, led by Chris Hemsworth reprising his role as Eric the Huntsman and Charlize Theron returning as the formidable Queen Ravenna. Emily Blunt joins the franchise as Freya, the Ice Queen, while Jessica Chastain portrays Sara, Eric’s long-lost wife and a skilled warrior. The supporting cast includes Nick Frost, who returns as the dwarf Nion, alongside Rob Brydon as Gryff, Sheridan Smith as Mrs. Bromwyn, and Alexandra Roach as Doreena, providing comic relief throughout the adventure. Sam Claflin also makes a brief appearance as King William, Snow White's husband, and Liam Neeson provides the uncredited narration that frames the tale. Financially, the film struggled to live up to the success of its predecessor. Produced on a significant budget of approximately $115 million, The Huntsman: Winter's War grossed roughly $48.4 million in the United States and Canada, and $116.6 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $165 million. Because of the high production costs and extensive global marketing campaign—which reportedly exceeded $45 million in the U.S. alone—the film was considered a "box office bomb." Estimates suggested the movie resulted in a loss of over $30 million for Universal Pictures, largely attributed to mixed reviews and stiff competition from other 2016 blockbusters like The Jungle Book.As of late 2025, The Huntsman: Winter's War is widely available for streaming, though its home platform varies by region. In many international markets, it is hosted on Max (formerly HBO Max) or Binge, while in other territories, it can be found on Netflix or Paramount+ depending on licensing agreements. In the United States, it frequently rotates between Peacock (due to it being a Universal film) and cable-based streamers like TNT/TBS. For viewers in regions without a dedicated streaming home, the film remains available for digital rental or purchase on major platforms such as Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, and Google Play.
