Marvel Studios' Thunderbolts* (released May 2025) serves as the 36th film in the MCU, directed by Jake Schreier. The film departs from the traditional hero dynamic, focusing instead on a group of reformed villains and "burned" assets who find themselves caught in a government conspiracy. The narrative begins with CIA Director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine facing impeachment due to her ties with the secretive O.X.E. Group. To erase evidence of her illegal "Sentry" superhuman project, she dispatches Yelena Belova, John Walker, Ava Starr, and Antonia Dreykov to a covert facility in Nevada, secretly intending for them to eliminate each other. During the skirmish, they accidentally release Bob, an amnesiac man held in a suspended animation pod. Realizing Val has set them up to be incinerated, the group forms an uneasy alliance to escape. Bob is revealed to be the survivor of super-soldier trials with god-like power, but he also harbors a destructive alter-ego known as The Void. After a series of betrayals and a climactic battle at the former Avengers Tower (now the "Watchtower"), the team helps Bob suppress The Void by confronting his past traumas. The film ends with Valentina publicly rebranding the team as the "New Avengers" to save her reputation, though Yelena makes it clear that the team now holds the leverage over her. Produced with a budget of approximately $180 million, Thunderbolts* had a modest but steady theatrical run. It opened with $76 million domestically and eventually grossed a worldwide total of approximately $382.4 million. While it didn't reach the "billion-dollar" heights of some earlier Marvel entries, it was praised by critics for its character-driven story and 88% "Fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes, outperforming several other recent MCU releases in terms of reception.Following its theatrical window, the film was released worldwide on Disney+ on August 27, 2025.
