Truth & Treason is a 2025 American drama film released on October 17, 2025, by Angel Studios, based on the true story of Helmuth Hübener, the youngest person executed by the Third Reich for treason. The film is directed by Matt Whitaker, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Ethan Vincent. Set in Hamburg, Germany, during World War II, the story follows the heroic 16-year-old Helmuth Hübener (played by Ewan Horrocks) as he grows disillusioned with the Nazi regime and their pervasive propaganda. After a Jewish friend is taken away and he becomes aware of the truth through illegally listening to banned international broadcasts like the BBC, Helmuth is moved by his moral and religious convictions to take a stand. He forms a resistance group with two friends, Karl-Heinz Schnibbe (Ferdinand McKay) and Rudolf Wobbe (Daf Thomas), secretly creating and distributing anti-Hitler leaflets throughout the city. This act of defiance soon attracts the attention of the Gestapo, specifically the meticulous officer Erwin Mussener (Rupert Evans), leading to a suspenseful cat-and-mouse chase. The film depicts Helmuth's courage, his subsequent capture and imprisonment, and his ultimate conviction for treason, which resulted in his execution at the age of 17, as he chooses truth over loyalty to a lie.
