Wrong Turn 2021
The 2021 reboot of Wrong Turn (released internationally as Wrong Turn: The Foundation) is a significant departure from the original franchise's cannibalistic roots, focusing instead on a primitive, isolationist community. Directed by Mike P. Nelson and written by the original creator Alan McElroy, the film follows Jennifer "Jen" Shaw and her five friends—Darius, Adam, Milla, Gary, and Luis—as they hike the Appalachian Trail in Virginia. Despite warnings from locals to stay on the path, the group ventures off-trail to find a Civil War-era fort and is quickly besieged by horrific "accidents," starting with a massive rolling log that kills Gary. As the group searches for Milla, who goes missing, they are captured by The Foundation, a self-sufficient society that has lived in the mountains since 1859. Led by the charismatic but ruthless John Venable, the Foundation operates under its own laws; when Adam kills one of their scouts in a panic, the group is put on trial. Adam is executed, and the others are sentenced to "darkness"—a state of being blinded and kept in underground pits. Jen manages to survive by offering herself as a wife to Venable to ensure the community’s "genetic diversity," while her father, Scott Shaw, eventually tracks them down to stage a bloody rescue. The film concludes with a final confrontation months later back in civilization, where Jen must use her newfound survival skills to protect her family from Venable's persistent pursuit. The cast is led by Charlotte Vega as Jen Shaw and Matthew Modine as her father, Scott. The supporting cast includes Bill Sage as the antagonist John Venable, Adain Bradley as Darius, Emma Dumont as Milla, Dylan McTee as Adam, Adrian Favela as Luis, Vardaan Arora as Gary, and Daisy Head as Edith. The film received generally positive reviews for its attempt to elevate the slasher genre with more complex themes of social isolation and clashing ideologies. Financially, the movie faced challenges due to its release during the COVID-19 pandemic. It earned a total worldwide box office of approximately $4.8 million, with about $1.25 million coming from a limited domestic run in the United States. However, it found significant success in the home media market, generating over $2.1 million in combined Blu-ray and DVD sales. For viewers looking to stream the film worldwide, it is currently available on various platforms depending on the region. In the U.S., it can be found on Showtime, Paramount+, and Hulu (with the appropriate add-ons), while internationally it is often available for rent or purchase on Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, and Google Play. In certain territories like India, the movie is available on Zee5 and Hungama Play.
