Adam is executed, and the others are sentenced to "darkness"—a state of being blinded and kept in underground pits. Jen manages to survive by offering herself as a wife to Venable to ensure the community’s "genetic diversity," while her father, Scott Shaw, eventually tracks them down to stage a bloody rescue. The film concludes with a final confrontation months later back in civilization, where Jen must use her newfound survival skills to protect her family from Venable's persistent pursuit.
