Amrum 2025

Directed by Fatih Akin and based on the childhood memories of veteran filmmaker Hark Bohm, the 2025 film Amrum is a stark historical drama set during the final weeks of World War II on the windswept North Frisian island of the same name. The plot follows 12-year-old Nanning, played by newcomer Jasper Billerbeck, who is forced into adulthood as he attempts to provide for his family while his father, an SS officer, is away at war. Nanning's mother, Hille (Laura Tonke), is a fervent Nazi supporter whose world collapses upon hearing news of Hitler’s death; following the birth of her new child, she falls into a deep depression and refuses to eat anything except white bread, butter, and honey—luxuries virtually non-existent due to wartime scarcity. This sends Nanning on a symbolic and perilous quest across the island's treacherous mudflats and rugged terrain to satisfy his mother's cravings, a journey that ultimately serves as an awakening of his own conscience as he begins to confront the "national guilt" and ideological lies of the crumbling regime. The cast is rounded out by Diane Kruger as the farmer Tessa Bendixen, Lisa Hagmeister as the pragmatic Aunt Ena, and Matthias Schweighöfer as Uncle Theo, with the film featuring a haunting, minimalist score and cinematography by Karl Walter Lindenlaub that highlights the isolation of the island. Commercially, the film found significant success in its home market, grossing approximately $7.97 million in Germany following its October 2025 theatrical release, contributing to a global box office total of roughly $8.22 million by the start of 2026.Distributed internationally by Beta Cinema and in North America by Kino Lorber, the film transitioned to digital VOD platforms in early 2026, where it is currently available for purchase on services like Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV, with a wider global subscription streaming rollout expected later in the year.
