Anemone 2025
Anemone (2025) is a psychological drama film that gained significant attention as the long-awaited return to acting for Daniel Day-Lewis after his announced retirement in 2017. The film is a collaboration between father and son, with Daniel Day-Lewis starring in the lead role and co-writing the screenplay with his son, Ronan Day-Lewis, who also makes his feature directorial debut. The plot centers on Ray Stoker (Daniel Day-Lewis), a former soldier in the British Army during the Northern Ireland Troubles who has been living a solitary, self-imposed exile as a hermit in the woods for two decades, haunted by a past trauma. His brother, Jem (Sean Bean), tracks him down to persuade him to return home, motivated by the troubled state of Ray's estranged son, Brian (Samuel Bottomley), whose mother is Nessa (Samantha Morton), Ray's former partner and now Jem's wife. The film, set in Northern England/Wales, explores themes of generational trauma, familial ties, and the long-lasting emotional and political violence that have torn the family apart. It features intense, often lengthy monologues by Day-Lewis's character as he confronts his inner demons and confesses the life-altering events of his past. The film, which premiered at the 2025 New York Film Festival, has been noted for its stunning, expressionistic cinematography by Ben Fordesman and the powerful performances, particularly by Day-Lewis, although some critics found the narrative to be slow and obtuse. Focus Features distributed the film, which had a limited theatrical release starting on October 3, 2025.
